Lilly Flower Vector Tut

Supplies:
Paint Shop Pro
(demo available from Corel)
I am using PSPX for this but ANY version will work.
This is a VECTOR tutorial, which means an intermediate level is required.

1. Open a new image 300x200 pixels. Transparent background.

2. Using your circular vector tool, (make sure create as vector is selected) with a foreground color of #425848 and a background color of #30aa4e draw an oval to the left and center of your image.

3. Right click on the circle, convert to path. Choose your pen tool. Now click on the node closest to the left hand edge of the image. Change the node type to cusp.

4. Draw the node a little towards the centre of the image. Then take the arrows of the cusp and pull them outwards towards the edge of the image. Your image should now look like this.

5. Repeat steps 2-4, but place the lilly pad next to your current one, and change the node on the right hand side. (as below)

6. The next step requires us to change our colours. Forground colour #265164 background colour #85a7b6. In the materials pallete, double click on your background colour, choose the gradient tab and find "foreground-background" from the list angle set to 0. Choose ok.

7. In your layers pallette create a new raster layer. This creates a space between the lily and the lily pads forcing them to be on separate vector layers.

8. Choose the circle vector shape tool again. This time draw an oval so that it sits on top of the
lily pads.

9. Right click on the oval, convert to path. Switch to your pen tool. Select the top node, convert to cusp, bring the two arrows down to the side of the circle, creating a tear drop shape. To complete the tear drop, take the two side nodes and move them downwards.

10. Repeast step 8 and 9 twice more. Creating some more petals. Using the pick tool (K) rotate the petals at the back slightly and then arrange them as so. (hint: like any layers, vector layers allow you to move "layers" - meaning you can move whichever petal to the top you choose.)

11. For the next step, draw another oval shape, convert the top node to cusp. And convert the right hand side node to cusp. On the top, repeat the tear drop shape, with one exception - drop the right hand side arrow down straight. Then on the right hand node, slide it down to almost the bottom, draw the bottom arrow of the cusp up short and also make the top one short, and move it out slightly. So that it looks like this:

Move this new shape over next to the tulip, repeat step 11, but reverse the shape (so that the flatter side is on the left, slide both into place under the front petal.

12. To make the folded down petals of this lily, we are going to draw another circle vector. Make it a tear shape as we made the first petals. Then choosing the pick tool, we are going to flip it. Take the box that is sitting at the top of the circle, and draw it down to the bottom. Then still using the pick tool, turn it slightly, and make it a little narrower. You may have to go into your gradient now, and invert it. (The shadow should be against the petal of the lilly). Repeat the process again, and flip to make another petal the same on the other side (as below)

Congragulations, you have made a vector Lilly :)

Now try changing the colour of the lily to pink or any colour you choose.

Happy Vectoring!!
